THIS WEEKS COURSES OF FIRE
- Doubles Drill, X-Files Practical Course
SHOOTING EQUIPMENT
- GUN - Any semi-automatic handgun that is in safe working condition. Revolvers are welcome but if shooting a revolver please be aware of the number of rounds we will be shooting on this week’s course of fire. You will need to be able to reload your revolver quickly.
- BELT/HOLSTER - Optimally we would like you to shoot from a holster. However we understand that some of our attendees may not be comfortable drawing from a holster yet and that is ok. If you prefer, you can start from the low ready position.
- EXTRA MAGAZINES - Some of our exercises include reloading the gun so we do suggest you have at least one extra magazine for your gun.
- EYE & EAR PROTECTION - All attendees must wear any time range is hot.
ROUNDS NEEDED
- 75 - 100 rounds - Preferred round calibers are 22LR or 9mm, but most handgun calibers are welcome.
SKILL FOCUS
- Firm high grip, sight alignment, trigger, drawing from holster, movement, target transition.
SHOOTER SKILL LEVEL
- All shooters are welcome; however, we do expect that you have a good understanding of gun safety, a safe gun handling mindset, you are comfortable loading / unloading your firearm and manipulating the slide. If you don't feel you meet this level please contact Rex Roberson, 303-253-1920, prior to attending the shoot.
WARMUP DRILL - Doubles Drill
12 - 18 Rounds Needed
The Doubles Drill aims to teach shooters to balance speed and accuracy with their controlled pairs and can be shot from a holster or the low ready position.
At the beep, put three sets of controlled pairs on the target at 5 yards. The time between the pairs isn’t important, the important part of this drill is your split time and the accuracy of your splits.
The goal of the Doubles Drill is to reduce your split times as much as possible while keeping all shots in that tight group. This drill helps you learn your limits as much as it helps you improve your speed and accuracy.
A firm grip and good sight picture are the two most important things while running the Doubles Drill.
- A high grip with as much contact on the pistol as possible paired with a firm, tight grip is critical to keeping the gun flat and on target for fast and accurate follow up shots.
- Acquiring and visually processing a good sight picture is the other component of the Doubles Drill. Without seeing your sights, accurate shots won’t be possible, especially at increased distances. The faster you see your sights and mentally process that they’re back on target, the faster the follow up shot will be.
Sometimes, getting better at the Doubles Drill requires deliberately failing the doubles drill. Try increasing your speed to the point where your accuracy suffers. When gauging your limits, that is perfectly acceptable. You’ll probably be surprised at how much you can increase your speed and still maintain reasonable accuracy.
If your second shot is always going wild, then you have an issue with your grip and your pistol is likely shifting during recoil. Focus down on getting a good firm grip. Try gripping the pistol even harder, but without the sights shaking.
The more you run the Doubles Drill, the better you will get at visually processing the feedback your sights give you. Keep running it and you’ll slowly get better. Because it’s such a quick and easy drill, this drill is a good drill to work into your regular training sessions.
PRACTICAL SHOOTING COURSE - X-Files
32 - 48 Rounds Needed
We will shoot a 16-round course of fire called X-Files (course diagram below). In this drill we will focus on moving and shooting while keeping our muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Targets are paper and distances will range from 3 yards to 15 yards.
We will shoot this course three times. The first time we will run it dry with an unloaded gun. Then we will run it again twice with live ammunition.
Don't be discouraged by the complexity of this course. The idea here is to get comfortable moving from target array to target array and transitioning from one target to the next. This is not a competition so don't worry about shooting fast.
You will shoot 16 rounds on this course and perform a mandatory reload so you will need more than one magazine.
Written Stage Brief
Start position will be heals touching the center of the rear barrier marked in pink facing downrange. If shooting from a holster, hands will be below the belt line. If starting from low ready, your muzzle will be pointed at a cone marker under target directly in front of you.
On the start signal, engage targets as visible from within the shooting area with the specified number of shots. Targets may be engaged in any order. You must reload at least once during the course of fire.
Paper targets require two hits.
I look forward to seeing you there. Please reach out if you have any questions.
