THIS WEEKS COURSES OF FIRE
- Ball & Dummy Drill , Steel Challenge Stages Speed Option & Accelerator
SHOOTING EQUIPMENT
- GUN - Any semi-automatic handgun that is in safe working condition. Revolvers are welcome but if shooting a revolver please be aware of the number of rounds we will be shooting on this week's course of fire. You will need to be able to reload your revolver quickly.
- BELT/HOLSTER - Optimally we would like you to shoot from a holster. However, we understand that some of our attendees may not be comfortable drawing from a holster yet and that is ok. If you prefer, you can start from the low ready position.
- EXTRA MAGAZINES - Please make sure you have at least two magazines for your gun but bring up to five if you have them.
- EYE & EAR PROTECTION - All attendees must wear any time range is hot.
ROUNDS NEEDED
- 100 rounds - Preferred round calibers for Steel Challenger are 22LR and 9mm but most handgun calibers are welcome.
SKILL FOCUS
- Grip, sight alignment, trigger, drawing from holster, target transition.
SHOOTER SKILL LEVEL
- All shooters are welcome; however, we do expect that you have a good understanding of gun safety, a safe gun handling mindset, you are comfortable loading / unloading your firearm and manipulating the slide. If you don't feel you meet this level please contact Rex Roberson, 303-253-1920, prior to attending the shoot.
WARMUP DRILL - Ball & Dummy Drill
Range: 3yd
Start position: Low ready or holster
Rounds needed: 12
This drill has been used for decades to help shooters overcome problems anticipating recoil and jerking the trigger.
We will use dummy rounds to do this drill. (I have 22LR & 9mm) Have a shooting partner load your pistol magazine with 6 rounds of live ammunition and 4 dummies, randomly mixed.
Using a small but close target, aim and shoot. You should have no idea whether you’re pulling the trigger on a live round or a dummy, so treat every trigger press as if it were going to fire. When you get to a dummy round, the pistol should stay perfectly still as you press the trigger. If you jerk the trigger or anticipate recoil, you’ll immediately see it because the gun will move off target.
This drill is only valid when you are shooting slowly and deliberately, working 100% on accuracy and zero on speed. As you start to shoot faster, it’s easy to mistake proper recoil management for “anticipation” and make you believe you are doing something wrong when you’re not.
STEEL CHALLENGE COURSE 1 - Speed Option
- You will need a minimum of 25 rounds for each round of this course. If you have 5 magazines, please bring them. If you don’t, please bring as many as you have for your gun.
- Don't be discouraged by this course. The idea here is to get comfortable transitioning from target-to-target array while standing in one spot. This is not a competition so don't worry about shooting fast.
STEEL CHALLENGE COURSE 2 - Accelerator
- You will need a minimum of 25 rounds for each round of this course. If you have 5 magazines, please bring them. If you don’t, please bring as many as you have for your gun.
- Don't be discouraged by this course. The idea here is to get comfortable transitioning from target-to-target array while standing in one spot. This is not a competition so don't worry about shooting fast.
I look forward to seeing you there. Please reach out if you have any questions.
